Cologne chasuble
Description
This chasuble, which was donated to the Musée de Cluny in 2019, is embellished with wide Cologne braids on Italian crimson velvet. The orphrey on the front is woven simply, while the chasuble cross combines weaving and embroidered details. The Crucifixion, the instruments of the Passion (the spear, the sponge), and the Latin inscriptions serve to remind us of the function of the chasuble, which is worn to celebrate the Mass that renews the sacrifice of Christ. Saint John supporting the Virgin appears at the foot of the cross, an iconography common in German countries.
