Preserving and transmitting an exceptional heritage site

Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, between the Sorbonne and Notre-Dame, the Musée de Cluny is set within a unique architectural landscape. A 15th-century townhouse set between a courtyard and a garden—the former residence of the Abbots of Cluny, expanded in the 19th century—stands alongside Gallo-Roman baths. These structures are linked by a contemporary entrance building designed in 2018 by architect Bernard Desmoulin.

While the major renovation completed in May 2022 focused on interior accessibility and collection presentation, urgent work is now required to ensure the preservation of this distinguished heritage:

  • Restoration of the Hôtel de Cluny’s historic garden and its integration into the visitor tour.
  • Continued enhancement of the Notre-Dame room collection.
  • Restoration of the roof coverings of the frigidarium.
  • Restoration and protection of the ancient remains of the Baths of Lutèce.
  • Restoration of the medieval townhouse's facades and roofs.
  • Restoration of the perimeter railings surrounding the museum on Boulevard Saint-Michel and Boulevard Saint-Germain.

Sharing, enriching, and restoring Europe's largest collection of medieval art

Renowned as the home of The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries—among the most famous medieval works in the world—the museum was founded in 1843 and houses a diverse collection of over 24,000 works.

At the Musée de Cluny, you can journey through 1,000 years of history, from late Antiquity to the early Renaissance.

Support the exhibitions organised each year by the Musée de Cluny, as well as its acquisitions policy aimed at enriching the national collections and its annual restoration campaigns for the works in its care.

Welcoming all audiences

Following its reopening in May 2022, the museum now offers a chronological tour across 21 rooms that is simpler and easier to navigate. An ambitious modernization project launched in 2015 ensured accessibility for all visitors while highlighting the architectural heritage.

The museum aims to welcome everyone—from novices to enthusiasts—and remain a source of wonder and shared knowledge. We are committed to reaching audiences who are traditionally underserved or distant from cultural institutions.

You can choose to support the museum’s culturally engaging programme, which is designed for audiences of all ages. This programme aims to be surprising, rich, thought-provoking, innovative and open to contemporary artistic expression and creation.

The museum also needs help to develop, in parallel, educational resources and programmes tailored to different types of disability.
