The Virgin nurses the Christ Child, holding him against her, sitting on a bench. He catches his mother’s veil with a gentle gesture while she arranges his swaddling clothes. The Virgin gazes at the Child with a melancholic expression. Her robe falls into deep pleats, while the cloak has smoother sections.

This very tender evocation of Christ’s childhood, as well as the workmanship of the piece, are characteristic of the Gothic sculpture of the late 14th century.
