Stained glass panel
This stained glass panel represents one of the episodes of the Passion of Christ preceding the Crucifixion.
The stained glass was located in a bay in the chapel of the Hôtel de Cluny around 1500. It is possible that Jacques d'Amboise, the Abbot of Cluny, commissioned this composition from one of the capital's most renowned workshops, which is also credited with the drawing of the Lady and the Unicorn.
The stained glass artist shows a virtuoso technique. He masters the use of grisaille and silver stain perfectly. He looks after the details of the characters, as revealed by the epaulette and studded doublet and of the guard in the foreground.
