Two panels of an altar frontal
Description
These panels are related to the religious order of Vallombrosa in Tuscany, founded in the 11th century by Saint John Gualbert. The founder's struggle against simony (the trafficking of goods and ecclesiastical sacraments) is illustrated by two episodes: he preached in Florence against Bishop Atton and subjected his disciple Pierre Igné to the ordeal by fire to denounce Bishop Pierre Mezzabarba.
Probably created by nuns for a monastery of their order, these exquisite embroideries use the or nué technique for various figures and elements of the landscape.
