Description

Late Middle Ages

This enamel tableau surrounded by a border in gemstones, which was then transformed into a kiss of peace, is both a reliquary and an image of devotion.

Relics (some of which still exist) occupied the quatrefoils of the border, the Gothic bays, and the compartment at the foot of the cross.

The very large enamel represents the Crucifixion associated with the instruments of the Passion and the Eucharist on a translucent blue background, evoked by the consecrated host and the inscription.

This exceptional piece, probably a royal or princely commission, may have been made in Paris.
