Orphrey fragments: Angels, Cl. 21276 © GrandPalaisRmn / Mathieu Rabeau
These two fragments represent kneeling angels, one holding a lily and the other a phylactery. They would have formed the ends of the arms of a cross on a chasuble, either side of the Virgin.
The gold background features diamond patterns which are embossed. The angels with multicoloured wings were embroidered separately, "in the round" and applied to the background.
The golden metallic threads in their coats have turned brown over time.
These angels are a beautiful example of relief embroidery, also known as "raised embroidery".
