This knife with an enamelled handle features the coats of arms and the motto of the powerful Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good. It features the Duke's heraldic shield arms, his personal emblem, the briquet adorned with flames, and the words "AULTRE N'ARAI" in Old French, meaning "I shall have no other". The origin of this motto is mysterious. It could refer to the exclusive nature of the Order of the Golden Fleece that he created in 1430 or be a promise of marital fidelity to his new wife, Isabella of Portugal, whose initials EE (Elisabeth) also appear on the object. This table knife, of which six other examples are known, was more intended to be used by a guest of the Duke than by the Duke himself.
