Late Middle Ages

This high altar panel painted on wood was made in the early 14th century. It depicts the Crucifixion between the Virgin Mary and Saint John.

Its affectedness, which is very noticeable in the strong representation of "mother’s pain", brings it closer to the prestigious achievements of master illuminator Honoré, whose art, highly appreciated in the royal environment, spread out from Paris.

A restoration in 2005 revealed a refined and luxurious painting technique (layering of ultramarine blues and azurite, use of metal sheets, and so on). The discovery, under the foot of the apostle, of a "heraldic shield" (incomplete but stamped with a mitre tip) would suggest a commission from the neighbouring abbey of Issoire, owner of the patronage of Sauvagnat.
