Resurrection of the Dead

Lintel fragments from Notre-Dame de Paris

Description

On display - Salle 5

13th century

High Middle Ages

These stone fragments belong to the two lintels that supported the tympanum of the central portal of Notre-Dame de Paris. The theme is the Last Judgment, with the Resurrection of the Dead depicted in the lower register and the Weighing of Souls in the upper register.

The museum preserves both ends of the Resurrection lintel, featuring angels blowing their trumpets and the dead rising from their sarcophagi. Their styles are quite different. The right-hand end appears more modern, with a more fluid style and drapes filled with beak-like folds, while the other fragment still reflects a more rigid and hieratic art.

This may be an example of collaboration on the same work by two artists from different generations. The last two fragments belong to the upper lintel and depict two damned souls and one chosen soul.
