Processional cross

From the abbey of Bonneval

Description

On display - room 6

13th century

High Middle Ages

This processional cross features enamelled figures on a golden background strewn with flowers and stars. The main face depicts the Crucifixion: beneath the Hand of God, the crucified Christ, with an angel above him, is flanked by the Virgin and St. John, as well as the Church and the Synagogue; at the foot of the cross, Adam, the first man, emerges from his tomb. On the other side, we see Christ in Majesty, triumphant over death, surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists (or tetramorphs) and four prophets of the Old Testament.
