A donor in prayer

This figure of a woman kneeling with her hands in prayer adorned a funerary monument amidst depictions of other family members. The highly coded quality of her garment, a high-waisted dress with a fur-trimmed neckline and long train gathered in thick pleats; her set of jewellery, a heavy chain with large links; and her headdress, a "head ornament" made up of veils folded several times on a frame, allow a lady of a high social rank to be identified. A drawing before the parts of the tomb were broken up during the Revolution identifies her as the wife of King Rene’s Chancellor.
