Triptych known as the "Saint-Sulpice-du-Tarn Triptych"
Description
A masterpiece of the art of Parisian ivory carvers, this triptych with movable shutters combines the balance of compositions, the monumentality of the figures on the central plate, standing out quasi in the round in a thick ivory plaque, and the science of bas-relief in the sculpture of the shutters.
The Passion and the Childhood of Christ are depicted in five scenes across two registers. In the centre of the lower register, the Virgin Mary (who once held the Child) is surrounded by two angels.
