Pierre de Montreuil
The Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés had a refectory built from 1235, followed by a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary between 1245 and 1255. Both of these buildings north of the abbey church disappeared at the beginning of the 19th century. They were the work of the architect Pierre de Montreuil, who was buried in the chapel in around 1267. The preserved portal is a significant testament to Parisian Gothic art in the mid-13th century: the plant decor features a rich variety of foliage, including vine, maple, fig, ivy, oak, and strawberry, contrasting with the smooth unfluted shafts of the small columns arranged in a row. Perhaps the tympanum featured an openwork rose. The trumeau was once hidden by a statue of the Virgin Mary.
After being moved twice during the first half of the 19th century, the portal was transferred to the gardens of the Musée de Cluny in 1891, and then reassembled inside the museum in 1981 to serve as the entrance to the Notre-Dame sculpture room.
Assigned in 1890.
