The Musée de Cluny houses a wide range of textiles, whose diversity in terms of materials, techniques and functions combines splendour with rarity, and the sacred with the secular.

The fragment from the Shroud of Saint Lazarus, embroidered with a sphinx and a horseman, was woven in a Muslim workshop in southern Spain. A fragment of the same fabric preserved in Autun bears the inscription “the Victorious”, a title reserved for the governor Abd-Al-Malik, who defeated the Christians in 1007. The shroud of the patron saint of Autun Cathedral is thus a rare example of an Islamic textile with a precise date.
