The Musée de Cluny houses a wide range of textiles, whose diversity in terms of materials, techniques and functions combines splendour with rarity, and the sacred with the secular.
The fabric depicting a quadriga crowned with the laurel wreath, a rare example of Byzantine textile, also draws its iconography from the classical repertoire. According to legend, it is said to come from Charlemagne’s tomb in Aachen.
