Description

Circa 1375-1390

Late Middle Ages

The embossed architectural decoration, pearls, and "glass stones" of this precious mitre, which comes from the treasure of the Sainte-Chapelle, rivals a goldsmith's craftsmanship.

One side depicts the Nativity and the Crucifixion, while the other shows the Annunciation and the Adoration of the Magi; a bishop is seen praying before the Virgin and Child on the fanons. This mitre is an early example of the refined or nué technique. Textile relics, sewn at the base of the fanons, were discovered during a restoration.
