The scientific and cultural project

A strategy looking towards 2035
The overall establishment strategy is guided by a scientific and cultural project (SCP). As a national museum, this SCP is proposed by the management of the Musée de Cluny and validated by the French Museums Service, a department of the Ministry of Culture.

A national museum since 1907, the Musée de Cluny has been specifically dedicated to the Middle Ages since 1992, and as of the law of 4 January 2002, it holds the status of a Musée de France. This means that it is responsible for a "permanent collection of items, the conservation and preservation of which are of public interest." This status sets major guidelines in terms of conservation, restoration, study and enrichment of collections. It also aims to make them accessible to everyone, designing and implementing educational and outreach initiatives to ensure equal access to culture for all. Ultimately, the vocation of museums in France is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and research.

The collections of the Musée de Cluny belong to the State, which assigns them to it. This status of national museum indicates the high quality of the works held in the museum and establishes the framework for its activities, which are carried out on behalf of the State.

The scientific and cultural project establishes action priorities based on these objectives, drawing from a regularly updated assessment.

The museum’s scientific and cultural project is currently being drafted and will be published shortly.
