Under a circular hat, a crown of small curls in the shape of shells surrounds an oblong face, and a forehead marked by two deep furrows. The eyebrows are very marked, extending on each side of a straight nose and separating the eyes, which are bulging round globes under eyelids in the shape of two folds. The upper of the two well-shaped lips, has a short moustache where the hair seems braided and joins the beard on the cheek. On the chin, the beard extends to form two heavy strands folding over each other, and descending to the left hand, held high in front of the chest and holding a phylactery which the right hand is unrolling. The whole thing is virtually separate from the column on which it rests.
The folds, spaced but sharp, bring this sculpture closer to other works like the portal of the cathedral of Senlis and that of the collegiate of Mantes, which constitutes the heart of the second stage of the birth of gothic art. Nevertheless, certain elements, like the very special work on the head and the beard, show the Parisian basis of this sculpture.
