The astragal is cut in the shape of a torus, and from its jagged base a squat circular basket emerges which would have once supported the abacus, which has not been preserved. In the lower part we see five scenes illustrating all the zodiac signs in succession. The eponymous constellation takes the shape of two naked young men, back to back, holding each other at the elbow with their heads at a forty five degree angle, a frontal view of the torso and legs in profile, as if dancing. This impression is strenghtenend by the manner in which they are closely entwined with the surrounding foliage. Following them, Capricorn was represented by a goat following a billy goat. Only the goat, with straight horns, slipping between the foliage, has been preserved. Then, come the fish, placed head to tail in an oval surrounded by the foliage. They are followed by Taurus with his four legs well anchored in the ground, ignoring the foliage surrounding him. Finally, the ram with its curved horns, and its head slightly towards the ground, makes its way carefully through the vegetation.
