Saint Mary Magdelen
Brussels, late 15th century Wood (oak) H. 0.97 m ; W. 0.36 m ; D. 0.24 m Acq. 1850; Cl. 1851
This charming Saint Mary Magdalen is shown with her traditional implement, the vase of fragrant oils she was to use to embalm Christ's body. The intricate hairstyle, with its braids wrapped around the bonnet and falling onto the shoulders, is in contrast with the relative simplicity of the clothing and the Saint's general demeanor. These characteristics match another statue of Mary Magdalen (Brussels, musée du Cinquantenaire), produced by Brussels scuptors specialised in devotional statuary, particularly altarpieces, towards the end of the 15th century.
