Charity of Saint Nicholas
Troyes, Saint-Etienne collegiate ca. 1170 - 1180 Stained glass H. 0.45 ; W. 0.56 Cl. 22849
By its quality, stained glass art at Troyes may be related, to that of the cathedrals of Soissons, Laon or San Quentin collegiate, circa1200. The characters, draped in wet vestments, bear a melancholy air. The treatment is meticulous and precious, and the folds in the clothing have a metallic outline. These different style characteristics link this stained glass to local sculpture as well as to contemporary miniatures of the Champagne region. At the end of the 12th century, the county of Champagne created greatly refined and delicate original art. At that time, the art of stained glass in Troyes reached a moment of perfection. |
