Embroidered Mitre
France (Paris ?), 14th century Silk, gold and silver thread, pearls H. 0.73 m ; W. 0.30 m Coll. Alexandre Lenoir Cl 12923
This embroidered mitre, inventoried in 1480 as part of the Sainte-Chapelle treasure, is made exceptional by the technique vying to rival the work of goldsmiths: the embossing, pearls, coloured glass beads, translucent enamels, now gone, even the architectural frame. It's probably a Parisian creation from the beginning of the 14th century.
